STAFF

RECOMMENDATIONS

52. DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY

Recommendations regarding additional staff requirements if first year courses in Biology are divided into Botany and Zoology (see 49 above) can not now be formulated. The increase in staff recommended below is necessary for the fulfilment of existing teaching commitments, with an eye to the possible development of Honours courses after the arrival of the Head of the Department. From second year courses Botany and Zoology are studied as separate subjects, and present staff is quite inadequate to deal with three years of each of these subjects. The Court of the University has recently converted a Readership in Biology to a Chair in Zoology. A proposed separation of Pre-Medical students from first year Science students will throw additional teaching work on the Department.

It is recommended, without prejudice to re-formulation of needs by the new Professor, that the following additional posts be created, appointments to be made as required:

53.

Senior Lecturer in Botany Lecturer in Zoology Technician Grade III

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

An additional senior member of staff is needed to prosecute research, to assist in Honours teaching, and to make possible mure suitable arrangements for the first year courses. It is proposed therefore to create a Senior Lectureship, which should preferably (for the reason referred to under Paragraph 50) be held by an organic chemist with experience in the investigation of natural products.

Further additional staff is required to cope with existing teach- ing commitments.

It is recommended that the following addi ti on al posts be created, appointments to be made by the dates shown:
